BUREAU ART : THE FALL SEASON IN L.A.

by Joshua A. TRILIEGI

The Los Angeles ART Scene is Turning out to be a
very strong season. West Hollywood, Culver City,
Bergamot Station , La Brea Arts District as well as
Chinatown Arts are all flexing some serious muscle.

MATTHEW MARKS

in West Hollywood

New and Recent Works by Master Artist : Jasper Johns.
The gallery itself has been designed by Ellsworth Kelly.
Which is a piece of Artwork all unto itself as well as a
fine contribution to The Los Angeles Arts landscape.

Jasper Johns is still making relevant, bold, visually
pleasing and collectible objects with a distinctly
American flair. His current work entitled, " NUMBERS"
is extremely impressive in size and form with a surface
of text, intaglio & a random - ish style with an exacting
effect on the viewer. Newsprint items that tell a larger
story within the hidden details. A Bold and iconic vibe
which is emblematic of an entire and solid career in Art.
Ever since being ' discovered ' by an unsuspecting Leo
Castelli, while visiting another Artists studio at the time.
Leo glanced into Jaspers doorway and was knocked out by
the Stars and Stripes of an American Flag during a time
when patriotism had been used against the 1960's counter-
culture. leo and Jasper waived that flag back into hipness.
We have been saluting mr Johns ever since & for good reason.

SAMUEL FREEMAN in Culver City

Another fabulous ArtSpace that is a pleasure to visit,
the design of these new galleriesare well thought out
and pleasing to peruse on a whole other level.

Representing Kevin Appel, Betsy Lin Seder, Cannon Hudson .
A nice trio with a variation of styles that seem to harken back
or at least have a starting point in the late 1960's & early 1970's.
One thinks of Donald Judd, Jazz graphics on The IMPULSE label
and a touch of Sigmar Polke. All compliments to a group of artists
who clearly have a bold and aggressive style all their own. Though
there is a lineage from Art History that cannot be denied. Seders
photographs have an exemplary form in the expressive walnut frames
that jettison out beyond the rectangle, expressive, lovely, well
crafted.

Hudson's " SLEEPER ' canvas is a little gem and Appel' s Sculpture
and Acrylic Screen Prints are experimental, melodic, vibrant, fun.
Easy to look at, easy to live with, the kind of composition that grows
through time and familiarity. www.SAMUELFREEMAN.COM

CRAIG KRULL at Bergamot Station

Currently Preparing for a great setof photographs by TIM BRADLEY

CALIFORNIA DWELLING

Retro - like Images of Southern California taken in the 1980's.
Though a few could be mistaken for classic 1950's images which
hint at the way we were headed culturally speaking, back then.
Some of these works foreshadow the 1980's obsession with the
1950's. A Post - Happy Days, pre - Melrose Avenue and the big
bang into retro clothes, music and, uhm , Reagan Era politics.

Lush and clear images of Homes, Apartments and you got it,
Dwellings. This is a great body of work from one of the classier
galleries to bring Art and Culture to Santa Monica. Craig Krull
is a consistent provider of great images with a vast and impressive
space that allows the viewer to feel as if there is plenty of time and
space to view and purchase classic images that are important,
collectible and worthy of your time and money. we highly suggest
this exhibition. View images on The BUREAU' s Home Flash page.

ACE GALLERY in the WILSHIRE District

Showing an importantbody of work by Mr Charles FINE.
A Thirty year retrospective thatdiscreetly exhibits the sculptures,
paintings and found object worksthat Fine has produced over the
past three decades. A Californiaartist who has a studio here in
Hawthorne California. Charlie is abit of a shaman and has been
a leader to a group of artists whichoriginally helped to launch
BUREAU of Arts and Culture Galleryback in the nineties :
Ron Riehel, Don Harger, Ernesto Potdevin,Jim Day and others.

These artists revere Mr Charles Fine and Ihave to say, so do I.
Humble, hard working and damn bold in hisstyle. His scupltures
harken back to Rodin and Brancusi but arealso entirely his own.

The paintings compare to Bleckner, but witha West Coast vision
and methodology. The found object pieces are
incomparable to any particular artists or movement, though are
strongly rooted in a ritualistic shaman like collection that reminds
one of Exotic Native American, African, Australian, objects which
hold an aura of magic, bewilderment and oddity that emits a glow.
Charlie Fine is a bit of a discovery waiting to happen when it comes to
the International Art Scene. We are very lucky and ought to understand
that to have a Charlie Fine in our own town is a blessing and an honor

MARK MOORE in Culver City

Currently exhibiting Surrealistic SelfPortraits by Julie Heffernan
in a kind of Heronymous Bosch likelandscape chocked full of ideas,
objects and earthly terrains that area blast to the visceral qualities
as well as a strange and interestingvision. Large. Lush. Lovely, yet
twisted. A sort of psyche story that wishes to encompass the
contemporary cavalcade of modern society.Does it reach that goal ?
Oh yeah, it goes beyond the goal and delivers.Very interesting work
with a technique and quality to match the ideas.

Also works by Brooklyn Artist Jean -Pierre Roy. A bleak overview of the
post modern variety with a slightly hopeful tinge. The compositions are
are wonderful to view, then you realize what it is your seeing, oh my.

Through to December 22nd 2012 www.MARKMOOREGALLERY.COM

KISHIO SUGA at BLUM AND POE in CULVER CITY

Through to Dec 22nd 2012

A fifty year survey with a lovely Book publication. Zen like
sculptures deceivingly simple in their execution and style.
A leading figure in " The School of Things " which defined
a whole new style of Art in the 1960' and 1970's in Japan.

Utilizing simple materials, transcending through what appears
to be simple decision making though clearing is a well thought
out schematic that resembles the work of a Zen gardener with
a flair for honesty, simplicity, respect for ones materials and a
sort of acceptance of the way things are, refreshing, honest, real.
The 244 page Book is a lovely publication honoring Art of the
Mono-Ha movement which as previously mentioned made the link
between industrial materials, nature and a bold, yet simple style.
Minimalism with a maximal effect. The exhibit displays recent as
well as classic works from the 70's and 80's by this master sculptor.
We highly suggest this exhibition. www.BLUMANDPOE.com

Roberts and Tilton in Culver City California

Egan Frantz is pushing the conceptual envelope with the use of
Champagne Bottles, French Bagguete' s, buckets of tinted water
and a group of materials from the Home Depot. Interesting, but
many of the works had folks scratching their heads. While Mr Black
exhibited a classic suite of paintings which were simple and lovely,
not unlike those which Pablo Picasso and his fellow Fauves fought
over originality and purpose of breaking down the classic myth that
today has indeed been entirely broken. Things may be so insane that
after the Champagne and Bread, we could use a return to the classics.
We applaud the boys and Roberts and Tilton for supporting this push
towards modernism-ism-ism-ism and will return for a second look soon.
